Michał Dziekan
- Born 1985
- Born in Bardo Śląskie
- Lives and works in Warsaw
- Specializes in press illustration, advert illustration and, so called, “character design”
“I have been always fascinated by sweet-sour themes such as those seen in the movie ‘Dzień Świra’ or those one of my favorite movie directors, Martin McDonagh in ‘In Bruges’”
Michał Dziekan started his studies at the Architecture Department of Wrocław Technical University. The course did not meet his expectations though, so he changed to studying the art of digital painting. Five years in the animation studio, Platige Image, and a spell in the Ars Thanea studio were enough for him to decide to devote himself to illustration completely.
There are elements of grotesque, absurd and even gallows humour in his drawings. He concentrates on social themes of everyday life, but often introduces surreal elements into his art. His artistic style first came to be appreciated in the United States, but he also likes to work for Polish press periodicals.
He has contributed to many periodicals, including “The Wall Street Journal”, “Disney/Hyperion”, “Highlights Magazine”, “American Interests”, “Maxim”, “DBB Warsaw” and “Havas Worldwide” and “CNET Magazine”, as well as to “Duży Format” and the Polish edition of “Newsweek”. Since 2011, he has been one of the coauthors of PKO BP Bank’s advertising campaign. In 2013, he was awarded a silver medal by Society of Illustrators in Los Angeles. A year later, he gave a series of lectures and ran workshops in Burbank, California, during the prestigious CNT Animation Expo.
