“Sometimes I imagine and I laugh to myself, every time a sad theme lands in a magazine, they say – It is a task for Podkościelny”.
She is not only inspired by everyday life but also dreams, fairy tales and mythology. She started her adventure with illustration with colour presentations but finally she settled for use of pencil. Using traditional means and very restricted chromatic scale based on black, sepia tone or greys, she builds melancholic, hushed world of human existence. Her drawings’ composition is characterized by much restraint very often limited to a single figure. Thus it may connote with religious painting, icons in particular. Decorativeness of her works is also very characteristic, since backgrounds or other parts of composition are often covered with patterned designs.
She graduated from Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk Design Department under tutelage of Ph.D. Adam Kamiński. Since 2014 she lectures on lettering, typography and composition at Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology in Gdańsk. Illustration, graphic design and lettering are her main art domains. Patrycja Podkościelny’s works can be seen in Polish magazines including “Znak”, “Przekrój”, “Newsweek Polska”, “2 +3D” as well as in Latvian “Popper Magazine” and Americans “GW Magazine” and “Nature Magazine”. In 2014 she created portraits for Adobe company campaign “I am the New Creative”. Together with Patryk Hardziej, she established in 2013 Negation Studio – a small studio for communication design of brands and applied graphics.
