“I look for a deceitful, ironic and difficult language. I am not interested in universal, visual Esperanto”.

He studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. In 2005, he obtained his diploma in the Graphic Design Studio of Professor Sławomir Janiak with an annex within the scope of painting in the Studio of Professor Bogdan Przybyliński. In 2007, he began his didactic work at his home university as an assistant in the Department of Graphic Design. In 2010, he became an associate professor and, now, is the Head of the Department.

He has presented his works in more than ten individual exhibitions, e.g. in Berlin, Kharkiv, Gdańsk, Łódź, Olsztyn, Poznań, Szczecin and Toruń as well as many group exhibitions organised in Poland and abroad (Berlin, Boston, Breda, Brno, Kharkiv, Eindhoven, Katowice, La Paz, Lahti, Leipzig, Lviv, Minsk, Mons, Moscow, Shenzhen, Istanbul, Quito, Tallin, Tehran, Trnava and Warsaw).

The most important prizes and distinctions: a distinction in Print category in the Design of the Year competition, 2013; 1st prize in the international competition for a poster “Today is already tomorrow”, Turin, 2014; a distinction at the International Graphic Design Festival “Strelka”, Nizhny Novgorod, 2014; 1st prize at the International Ecologic PosterTriennial “4th Block”, Kharkiv; 2015, Golden Bee in Hand made design category at the International Graphic Design Biennial, Moscow, 2016; bronze medal in Public campaign poster category at the 2nd International Poster Festival, Shenzhen, 2016; the main prize in the 17th competition of the AMS Poster Gallery “I’m thinking about the Vistula”, 2016.

Nikodem Pręgowski is an experimentalist. He looks for various methods of transforming verbal content in a condensed language of artistic signs. His aim is to reveal the results of his own artistic and non-artistic reflections through crossing of established conventions and looking for new visual traces. He tries to overcome all types of cultural habits. He explores a multiple spectrum of artistic language resources as well as various imaging conventions, but an inherent feature of his works is provokingly incompetent shaping of forms, the style of awkward drawing, purposefully wrong composition solutions, workshop shortcomings, crooked, hand-drawn lettering elements and, in the visual layer – a grotesque, witty manner of theme presentation. The content motifs, their visual solutions, the choice of artistic codes, shaping of relations between a picture and topographic elements, condensation and dilution of signs within the poster surface create an indefinite chain of artistic experiments of the artist examining the perceptive load capacity and the expressive potential of the artistic imaging solutions created by him.
