“A poster should be graphically beautiful and make a lot of noise with its message. Each of my posters contains a patch of my soul. I play with the form, trace, colour and texture. A poster is a synthesis and, sometimes, a starting point for further activities. It’s just enough to open your head, spread your wings and fly”.
She studied at the Faculty of Graphics of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. In 2000, she obtained her diploma in the Poster Studio of Professor Roman Kalarus and an annex in the Painting Studio of Professor Roman Nowotarski. She is currently working at her home university in the position of an assistant professor in the studio of Professor Roman Kalarus.
She has presented her works in many individual exhibitions in Poland and abroad (Bielarus, Denmark and Island). She has also taken part in many group exhibitions and poster reviews organised e.g. in Bielarus, China, Iran, Japan, Russia, Slovakia, the United States and Hungary.
The most important prizes and distinctions: The Prize of the University of Silesia Rector at the 17th Polish Poster Biennial, Katowice, 2001; an honorary distinction at the 19th International Theatre Poster Biennial, Rzeszów, 2004.
The artist plays with form and graphic matter. She changes them into signs-metaphors with a strong expressive quality and a suggestive content message. In her posters, Monika Starowicz focuses on cultural and social themes. She also prepares advertising and commemorative posters. Her artistic language is mostly based on the use of painting, drawing and graphic techniques.
